De La Soul not only performed a piece of their new project on The Tonight Show earlier this week, but they chopped it up with their good friend and fellow hip-hop legend Questlove backstage. For the segment, Questo asked the Three Plugs a series of fan questions, which ranged from the roots (no pun intended) of their rap names to their favorite collaborations to the making of their classic debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising.

He also got De La to weigh in on the current debate over new rappers knowing their hip-hop history. “I don’t necessarily feel like it’s everyone’s responsibility, but it is sad that a lot of kids don’t know their history,” Posdnuos said. “They’ll know a lot of stuff about wildin’ and gangsta stuff, but they won’t even know the basis of where hip-hop came from.”
Unfortunately, the mystery over why the world has never been blessed with a De La Soul and The Roots collaboration remains unsolved, but not for lack of trying on Quest’s part. If you can’t record with ’em, join ’em.
